THE MATCH SOCIETY
The Match Society is Sydney based and its Members are made
up from those who have taken part in The Lucifer Golfing Society’s Commonwealth
Tournament, which is held in England annually during early July.
In 1995 a decision was made by the Lucifer’s to have a “friendly day” with the Australian and New Zealand competitors during that years Commonwealth Tournament, foursomes in the morning followed by a serious lunch, this is a great day and much fun is had by all.
To encourage those golfers from the Commonwealth who may be visiting the UK to take part in the Commonwealth Tournament, which is an experience you will never forget, a number of Overseas Lucifers have been elected by The Lucifer Golfing Society to foster the Commonwealth connection and so The Match Society in N.S.W. was formed to do just that in 2005.
We in Sydney were fortunate to have a Lucifer who visited Australia each year during the English winter months, his name was Tom Preston who had been Captain of The Lucifer Golfing Society during 1998-99 and had organised many Lucifer Tours of the Commonwealth.
Tom Preston was instrumental in the formation of The Match Society and became its Founding President. Tony Parker, a frequent visitor to the Commonwealth Tournament and twice guest speaker at the Commonwealth dinner, was elected Captain and Barry Holmes was elected Sec/Treasurer.
In 2014 Tom Preston sadly died at home in England and the Lucifer Golfing Society realised changes to the Match Society executive were necessary, as a result Tony Parker became President, Stuart Cox became Captain and Kerry Osgood, a 3 time winner of The Commonwealth Tournament became Sec/Treasurer.
Today, The Match Society meets twice a year in March and October to play golf, which almost always follows a luncheon, and to compete for a trophy named in recognition of Tom Preston. The member with the best score over the two rounds holds a perpetual trophy donated to us by The Lucifers.

THE LUCIFERS AND OUR LINKS
The Lucifer Golfing Society was founded in 1921 by the late
Sir Henry le Bas and originally was to be called The Match Club, but there was
already a Match Club so Lucifer it became.
The first Patron of the Society was H.M. King George V and ever since then this position has been held by a Senior member of the Royal Family, the current Patron being H.R.H.The Duke of York. KG, KC.V.O, ADC.
The inspiration to form such a club, which was then limited to only 60 members (now 100 members) was simply to play matches amongst themselves each month followed by a handsome dinner. The Club was very successful, so in 1928 to welcome and return hospitality for golfers from the Commonwealth when visiting the UK, the Commonwealth Tournament was founded.
Today, the Commonwealth Tournament takes place on the first Monday of July each year at West Hill Golf Club then on the Tuesday at Walton Heath Golf Club followed by a grand” black tie” dinner at The Savoy Hotel on the Wednesday evening.
Apart from the Commonwealth Tournament itself you may have the opportunity of playing other fine courses throughout Britain during your stay. Lucifer members are generous enough to offer their home club for you to play as their guest, so as a result there is a number of courses available after the competition.
Over the past 25 years, Australians have dominated the attendance to the Tournament and as a result have produced over 30 winners, the first being in 1934 and today many of the latter day winners play in the Match Society tournaments. Other winners have come from some 21 countries, giving the tournament a truly Commonwealth atmosphere.
